The other causes of vertigo

The most usual cause of vertigo symptoms is benign positional vertigo. This has been dealt with more extensively elsewhere, but basically this is caused by tiny crystals in the inner ear becoming dislodged and interfering with the vestibular system. Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner; this inflammation is most often due to a bacterial or viral infection. An acoustic neuroma is a tumor that can cause vertigo by interfering with the vestibular system through pressing on the vestibular nerve. In some cases the tumor may need to be removed or radiotherapy might be the action deemed necessary.

Ménière disease causes vertigo along with other symptoms such as temporary deafness and loud swooshing noises in the ear. It is caused by changes in the amount of fluid within the labyrinth of the inner ear. There is no real cure for this disease, but there are treatments to help control things. In some instances surgery may be required.

A cerebellar hemorrhage can sometimes cause vertigo due to decreased blood flow to the base of the brain or bleeding at the back of the brain. This is a very serious condition that needs to be treated promptly, and is another reason why you should always take vertigo seriously if you don’t know the cause.

A bang to the head or neck might cause the symptoms as well as other types of trauma. In most cases this vertigo will resolve itself, but a head injury and neck injury should always be treated by a trained professional when these types of symptoms arise.

Certain medications can bring on the symptoms of vertigo in some people, and if this happens you should tell your doctor immediately to see if you need to change medications. Some of the drugs that have been found to cause vertigo include; pain killers, antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, and quinine. Long-term use of antibiotics can also lead to problems.

Cogan’s syndrome causes inflammation in the cornea and has been known to cause vertigo.

Some people who have severe migraines can also suffer with vertigo.

Alcohol abuse can also cause people to develop vertigo.

As you can see there are quite a few possible reasons as to why a person might be having the symptoms of vertigo. Once you go visit your doctor they will be able to conduct a full medical examination to establish the exact cause. This can involve not only a physical examination, but perhaps blood tests and possibly a CT or MRI scan. Most of the causes of vertigo can be treated or at the very least have the symptoms controlled.
