Vertigo and Meniere disease
One possible cause for vertigo symptoms is Ménière disease. This is a disease of the inner ear that causes not only vertigo but also tinnitus, swooshing noises in the ear, periods of hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness in the ear and what feels like pressure in head. When a person has this condition their vertigo attack can be quite severe. In many cases the condition will only affect one ear.
What is the cause of Ménière disease?
Inside the inner ear is a structure called the labyrinth and this structure contains fluid; this fluid is important because our brain uses the movement of it to control balance and work out our position in space. People with Ménière disease have a change in fluid volume within this labyrinth and it is this that causes all the problems. Scientists don’t fully understand why this fluid volume is disrupted, but believe that it could be due to allergies, infections, or noise pollution. They believe that the extra fluid comes from fluid used in other parts of the tissue and structures surrounding the ear.
