Safety precautions for vertigo balance problems

Vertigo is a disturbing sensation that can not only be unpleasant but could also possibly put us in danger. For some people the experience of vertigo will occur once and will never be a problem again, for others it can last for a few weeks or months, some people will need to deal with vertigo for a lot longer and for them safety precautions will be a real issue. During a vertigo attack we have balance problems and we can feel faint and this is when real danger can occur, it is for this reason of instability that we need to prepare as best we can.

It is also important that you remove any sharp objects that might be sticking out around the house. For example if you have a glass table you might want to move it somewhere that it won’t be easy for you to fall onto. You might also want to remove rugs and install non-slip mats in bathrooms. It might be a good idea to leave a night light on in case you have an attack during the night. Don’t keep thing stored in high places in case you have an attack while trying to retrieve them.

When you have vertigo it is recommended that you avoid driving and using some types of machinery. You should also keep away from ladders and heights in general. Make sure that you wear sensible non-slip shoes that fit snugly and either don’t have laces or have laces that are securely tied, and be aware that you can have trouble in open spaces. You should give your family and friend’s instructions about how they should manage your vertigo attacks, and it might also be a good idea to carry around some instructions in case you have an attack while with people you don’t know.

Vertigo can be frightening but if you are more prepared then you will be less likely to have any accidents. Hopefully the suggestions mentioned here can go some way to helping with this.
