The lightheaded feeling combined with swimming vision and nausea can also make life a bit unbearable generally.

The first step to preventing vertigo attacks is to treat the underlying condition that is causing it. Maybe you have an inner ear infection or have developed benign postural vertigo? These can both be treated and once they are the vertigo should no longer be a problem for you. The treatment can take a while to work though, and you may have to put up with the symptoms for a few weeks or maybe even a few months. If you have a disease like Ménière disease then you might have to deal with the problem for the rest of your life.

While waiting for the treatment to work your doctor might prescribe certain medications to control the symptoms and hopefully prevent attacks of vertigo. Many of the drugs that are used to treat motion sickness are also used for vertigo so the doctor might get you to take some anitemetics, antihistamines, anticholinergics, or vestibular suppressants. These can sometimes work really well at controlling the symptoms of nausea, that lightheaded feeling, spinning, and the sensation of being pulled down.

Ginko biloba and ginger can work quite well and some people claim that other natural remedies such as Vinpocetine and Tanacetum parthenium might help. It may not be possible for your doctor to completely prevent your vertigo attacks; at least not in the beginning. So it is important that you know what to do when an attack does occur. If you are in danger of vertigo then you shouldn’t really be driving, using machinery, or hanging around heights. The best thing that you can do during an attack is to lie down; this way you will be less at risk of injury. Be prepared to roll on your side if you need to vomit, but otherwise try not to move your head in any jerky movements as this can exacerbate the symptoms. You might also find it helpful to focus on a stable object and don’t close your eyes as this can make things a lot worse. Safety precautions for vertigo balance problems
